Background
John Hulland joined the faculty of Pitt’s Katz School in 2001. Prior to that he was a faculty member in the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario from 1989 to 2001. His research is focused on understanding and managing the relationship between marketing resources and firm performance, improving the effectiveness of marketing and sales group interactions within firms, understanding how an individual's elaboration of potential outcomes affects his or her subsequent decision making, and applying causal modeling techniques in strategic contexts.

Hulland's work has been published in a variety of journals, including Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Marketing Science, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Product Innovation Management, International Journal of Research in Marketing, and Marketing Letters.

Hulland received a PhD from MIT, an MBA from Queen’s University, Ontario, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Guelph. Ontario.

Background

Born in Kitchener, Canada, and raised in Montreal, Schunn completed his BS at McGill University in Montreal. He earned his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University in psychology. From 1998 to 2001, he was an assistant professor of applied cognition at George Mason University. Since 2001, he has been a faculty member in the psychology department and a research scientist at Pitt’s Learning Research and Development Center.

With appointments in three different graduate training programs, his work is interdisciplinary and quite diverse. He has received more than $55 million in grants and has published more than 60 journal papers, books, and book chapters on a wide variety of topics at the intersection of cognitive science and educational application, in domain areas as diverse as army leadership, football coaching, weather forecasting, astronomy, submarine navigation, and engineering design. From 2003 to 2006, he codirected a multiuniversity center focused on improving math and science education K-12 in large urban settings, and currently codirects the Center on Cognition and Science Education, which seeks to apply to cognitive science research findings to systematically improve existing middle school science curricula.
